Commonwealth Day is celebrated this year on 12 March 2018. This year there are again 53 members of The Commonwealth after The Gambia rejoined the organisation earlier this year. This year will see the holding of CHOGM (Commonwealth Heads Of Government Meeting) from 19 to 20 April in London and Windsor and the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia from 4 to 15 April at the Carrara Stadium in Carrara.
Royal Mail will not issue any stamps to commemorate the hosting by The United Kingdom of CHOGM but Australia Post will commemorate Australia's hosting of the Commonwealth Games by the release of a single stamp, depicted below, as well as a number of sheets containing Greetings stamps with attached labels (see Blog 1136).
The theme of this year's Commonwealth Day is 'Towards A Common Future'.
A number of Commonwealth countries celebrate significant Independence anniversaries this year - Sri Lanka (70th anniversary on 4 April, see Blog 1189), Nauru (50th anniversary on 31 January see Blog 1171), Mauritius (50th anniversary today, 12 March, commemorative stamps issued on 12 March - see below - Solomon Islands (40th anniversary on 7 July), Tuvalu (40th anniversary on 1 October), Dominica (40th anniversary on 3 November) and Swaziland (50th anniversary on 6 September, commemorative stamp news awaited).
🇲🇺 The issue by Mauritius Post is made up of 3 stamps and 1 miniature sheet released, as stated above, on 12 March 2018. The Rs6 depicts the words of the national anthem, the Rs13 depicts the national flag with the motto Lame dan lame, which I imagine is Creole for Hand in hand, and the Rs1 depicts Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius, past and present. The miniature sheet contains all 3 values. These are not the most exciting of designs, in true modern Mauritius fashion, but it's an important issue. Rating:- ****.
