585. More Queen Elizabeth II Longest Reign Philatelic Items.

The latest list of philatelic products to be released by the US-based philatelic agency, IGPC, includes a number with the names of Commonwealth territories printed on them. As usual many of the subjects featured on the stamps have little or no relevance to the territories whose names appear on the items.
Several of the products commemorate the achievement of Queen Elizabeth II in becoming the longest reigning monarch of Great Britain and in so doing she also becomes the longest reigning monarch of territories such as Tuvalu and Papua New Guinea and so such issues may also be seen as being relevant to those particular territories although all such issues fail to draw attention to her role as their Head of State.
I note that many of the sheetlets contain 6 stamps rather than four which generally used to be the number of stamps included in a sheetlet - could IGPC be feeling the pressure of the market where collectors are becoming more discerning about which new issues they buy and therefore reducing their purchases causing the philatelic agency to compensate for reduced sales by increasing the price of a sheetlet by including more stamps in it? Just a thought.

  1. I know it's unlikely that Queen Elizabeth will NOT reach this milestone, but IGPC and others are going to look pretty silly if some illness suddenly affects her.

I suppose then they will reissue the same stamps with black borders/memoriam overprints :-(

  2. I agree entirely - it's hard to understand why these businesses cannot wait till the actual date before cashing in on this historic event. If nothing else it would be respectful to the Queen. As you say I cannot imagine that these organisations would not hesitate to overprint the stuff if the Queen did not actually become the longest reigning monarch for whatever reason - IGPC and some of the other agencies and postal administrations have never really embraced good taste if there's a profit to be made.
