1050. 🇬🇩🇬🇾 Daft Or Desperate?

🇬🇾🇬🇩 The entity which once described itself, with not a hint of irony, as the "World's Most Respected Philatelic Agency" - and otherwise known as IGPC - has sent out information about upcoming philatelic products it intends to unleash on an unsuspecting world.
First of all we have items related to the Chinese New Year. Not the Year of The Rooster which we are now about five months into, but the next part of the cycle - the Year of the Dog which runs from 16 February 2018 to 4 February 2019. The British Post Office used to have a slogan, "Post early for Christmas" so I'm guessing that IGPC has rejigged that to "Post early for Chinese New Year".
Of course most of these issues are aimed at the philatelic market in China with new issue buying falling off so much in the countries of the West but issuing stamps for a festival which is 6 or 7 months in the future is either just plain daft or perhaps desperate to garner revenue in the face of a failing new issue market. I suspect the latter. I am very suspicious that new issue sales are generally now very poor and the only chance to stay afloat and perhaps to make good profits is to keep pouring out stuff for the Chinese market while collectors there are still prepared to spend their money on such products.
For most countries whose names appear on these products there is little or no relevance of the subjects which are depicted on them. Unless perhaps there are wild National Chinese New Year celebrations in Guyana or Petite Martinique. I suspect not.
The designs are painful to look at - twee cartoon dogs or a rather monstrous depiction of what looks like a zombie giant panda on the Carriacou and Petite Martinique item. No doubt the citizens of Guyana and Grenada Grenadines will be proud to stick this sort of stuff on to their mail and promote their country's image to the outside world with them.

🇦🇬🇬🇭🇬🇩🇬🇾 Another great idea to be promoted by IGPC is an upcoming series of National Geograhic photographs on stamps under the umbrella title "Animals Of The World" in which countries which have very interesting wildlife of their own issue stamps which depict animals from other countries or even other continents. Thus the South American republic of Guyana features a giraffe on one of its stamps and the hot sunny Caribbean island of Antigua And Barbuda has a Snowy owl from the icy Arctic depicted on one of its stamps. Oh, and of course there's the ubiquitous Giant Panda which turns up on a stamp from whereelse but Ghana. Daft or desperate? - you decide.

1049. 🇬🇬 Guernsey Commemorates Local Regiment.

🇬🇬 Guernsey Post will issue an excellent set of 6 stamps and 1 miniature sheet on 1 September 2017 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Princess of Wales' Royal Regiment which, so Guernsey Post informs us, is the successor regiment to the Royal Hampshire Regiment and is the county regiment for the South-East of England along with the Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands. With this information Guernsey Post seems to have established a good degree of relevance of this issue to Guernsey.
The issue uses some extraordinarily good and interesting photographs in its designs and the miniature sheet depicts Diana Princess Of Wales and thus gives Guernsey Post the chance to mark the 20th anniversary of her death in a road accident in Paris. This is an excellent issue and I shall be pleased to add it to my Guernsey collection. Rating:- *****.

🇸🇬  In Blog 1033 I mentioned the set of 4 stamps issued by Singapore Post on 12 July 2017 on the subject of Wedding Jewellery. The set was accompanied by a miniature sheet which combined all 4 values. It is a very attractive item. Rating:- *****.

Singapore Post will next issue a tremendously good set of 6 stamps and 1 miniature sheet on 4 August 2017 on the subject of "Morning in Singapore". This is a highly original theme and design which deals with day-to-day life in the city state and the individual stamps are highly detailed so that one can spend some time just looking at what all the depicted Singaporean citizens are up to. The marvellous designs are by Brett Antonio and Christian Hernandez (DNA Life Pte Ltd) and lithographed by Secura Singapore and perforated 13. Rating:- *****.

🇧🇩 Bangladesh Post issued a single stamp on 17 May 2017 as a "Celebration of WTISD 2017" (World Telecommunications and Information Society Day). The stamp was designed by Sanjiv Kanti Das and lithographed by The Security Press Corp. (Bangladesh) Ltd., Gazipur and perforated 12.5. Not the most exciting of new issues I regret to say. Rating:- **.

1047. 🇰🇮 New Issue From Kiribati Commemorates Marine School.

🇰🇮 The Kiribati postal service is to issue a set of 4 stamps and 1 miniature sheet to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Kiribati Marine Training Centre. The issue was designed by Derek Miller. Rating:- ****.

🇹🇻 There is also news of issues from Kiribati's neighbour, Tuvalu, where IGPC holds sway over most, if not all, stamp issues.
A sheetlet of 4 stamps and one miniature sheet was issued on 23 June 2017 to commemorate Astana Expo 2017 in Kazakhstan. This issue has some relevance, surprisingly, to Tuvalu since the exhibition's main theme is "Energy of the Future" and this is a subject of existential importance to Tuvalu which is rapidly disappearing under the waves of the Pacific Ocean due to climate change. Bearing this in mind. I give this issue a rating of *** which is *** more than it  would have received otherwise.

Less acceptable is the continuing philatelic exploitation of the tragic Diana Princess Of Wales in which IGPC indulges on a regular basis. The 20th anniversary of her death affords the agency a new opportunity to try to squeeze money out of those who had an affection for her and collect Diana memorabilia. So, the Tuvalu postal administration is said to have issued 2 sheetlets, each of 4 stamps, on 26 June 2017. Not an issue for my Tuvalu collection, I'm afraid. Rating:- 0.

🇵🇬 Papua New Guinea Post has brought its list of planned issues for 2017 up to date. The first is a typical IGPC product - 4 stamps and 2 miniature sheets which mark the Lunar new year, the Year of The Rooster. The designs are dire - gaudy and tasteless. These products were released on 23 June 2017 and were designed by Yang'hueng Yansom and lithographed by Henan Post Printing. Rating:- 0.

In Blog 1036 I mentioned another IGPC set said to have been released on 28 June 2017 which commemorated the 20th anniversary of the death of Diana Princess Of Wales.

Subsequent to that Papua New Guinea Post is planning to issue the following:-

June 2017 - Faces of Papua New Guinea
  August 2017 - Valuable shells
31 July 2017 - Year of The Dog (another IGPC issue)

August 2017 - Rare birds of Papua New Guinea
August 2017 - "Editable plants" (sic
August 2017 - Joint issue with India, national birds
  August 2017 - "100 Years of St. Joseph's"
  September 2017 - "NBPOL 50th anniversary"

Whether or not these numerous items actually make it to the philatelic market in the next 2 months remains rather a dubious question given Post PNG's performance in the last year or so.

There is more stuff from IGPC - more Diana exploitation and depiction of the rather vulgar Donald Trump whose face on stamps is something we are going to have to get used to:-

🇦🇬 Antigua And Barbuda - 1 July 2017 - Centenary of the death of Edgar Degas - see Blog 1039

🇰🇳 Nevis - Flowering trees - 2 sheetlets each containing 4 different stamps. Rating:- **.

🇲🇸  Montserrat - 24 May 2017 - Bats - 1 miniature sheet of 4 different stamps and one containing a single stamp. All depicted species are to be found in Montserrat. Rating:- ****.
